P0899 Everything you wanted to know about NGS and bioinformatics support

Andrew Severin , Iowa State University, Ames, IA
The Genome Informatics Facility at Iowa State University was formed on September 1, 2011.  During the process of starting a new facility, it became clear that many researchers struggle to make sense out of their sequencing data and have questions about what can and cannot be answered using high-throughput sequencing.  Additionally, an increasing number of universities and labs are hiring bioinformaticians but do so with limited information concerning the infrastructure required to facilitate efficient data analysis. This poster explores the types of sequencing technology currently available, its cost, the types of projects that are becoming commonplace and considerations when hiring a bioinformatics specialist.
