Plant Sciences at JGI

The Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute has been instrumental in sequencing and contributing to the greater research community high-quality plant, algal, fungal and microbial genome analyses to build genomic infrastructure for species critical to improving biofuel development, plant model systems, plant comparative science and understanding global carbon cycling. In this session, we will present an overview of the current mission of the JGI Plant Program and introduce the JGI Plant Program Flagship organisms and the value being accrued by these resources for the greater plant research community. We will describe a large-scale data collection project called the JGI Plant Gene Atlas, coordinated by expert JGI plant project collaborators, targeted at adding functional information across the JGI Plant Flagship genomes and introducing broader scale functional assays into JGI plant projects. We will hear from several leading scientists who have developed model or crop genome resources with the JGI and how these resources are being applied today. In addition, we will cover tools and data available on the JGI Plant genome portal, Phytozome, and the doís and doníts of developing and submitting a successful proposal to work with the JGI on a scientific project.
