Buffalo genome

Water buffalo were domesticated over 5,000 years ago and are economically important animals in many parts of the world. They provide more than 5% of the world milk supply. There are two types of domestic water buffalo, the River Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) which are the predominant type found in the west from India to Europe. The second type, the Swamp Buffalo (Bubalus carabanesis), is found more frequently in the east from India to the Philippines. The draft reference sequence of the river buffalo has been completed and an outline sequence has been produced for the swamp buffalo. Resequencing of individuals from several breeds of river and swamp buffalo has identified nearly 2 million variations and the information has been used to create a Buffalo 90K SNP chip. The Buffalo Workshop will showcase work underway on the buffalo genome, from the annotation of the reference sequence to the worldwide study of buffalo genetic diversity and the identification of genetic mutations causing developmental malformations. The project is an open collaboration and new participants and contributors are welcome
