Sex Chromosomes and sex determination

Sex chromosomes have evolved multiple, independent times in all major eukaryotic lineages—plants, animals, and fungi. While the genetic basis of sex determination and sexual dimorphism can vary considerably in these diverse lineages, the same molecular mechanisms appeared to be involved in the emergence and evolution of sex chromosomes in both plants and animals. Sex chromosomes are distinctive because of their gender-determining role and the genomic features that reflect their evolutionary history. Substantial progress has been made on the discovery and characterization of sex chromosomes in plants, animals, and fungi. The interests on sex chromosome research have been rising in the plant and animal research communities. This workshop will facilitate the communication and promote collaborations among labs working on sex chromosomes and sex determination in both plants and animals.
