The IRIS database (www.iris.irri.org) developed at IRRI holds several types of rice data such as germplasm passport and field evaluation data. To give users the best browsing experience, we developed a new web system using a combination of Java web technologies including Apache Wicket and Google Web Toolkit (GWT) and relational databases. The web interface provides users with basic query and browsing functions for germplasm and phenotypic data. The summary statistics for each phenotypic data set or each trait are graphically displayed. A data mining tool (StudyMart) with a multi-trait value filtering function is also integrated. The backend of the system consists of a relational database in MySQL and Java based middleware to deal with data flow between the database and the web interface. A flexible database schema was designed to store phenotypic data and related experimental design factors. The Java middleware conducts the business logic to enhance system performance as well as separating data presentation from storage. A prototype of the system is available at http://webtools.cropinfo.org/WCIMS/. This system is being adapted to other crop species by GCP.
